Leslie Nielsen of 'Naked Gun' fame dies at age 84

Leslie Nielsen, who traded in his dramatic persona for inspired bumbling as a hapless doctor in "Airplane!" and the accident-prone detective Frank Drebin in "The Naked Gun" comedies, died on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 84.

The Canadian-born actor died from complications from pneumonia at a hospital near his home at 5:34 p.m., surrounded by his wife, Barbaree, and friends, his agent John S. Kelly said in a statement.

President Obama gets 12 stitches for lip injury while playing basketball

President Obama needed 12 stitches on his upper lip after he was inadvertently hit friday morning while playing basketball with friends and family at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C.The president was playing defense when Rey Decerega, an opposing player, turned into him to take a shot and his elbow hit Obama in the mouth.
“I learned today the president is both a tough competitor and a good sport,” Decerega, said in a written statement. “I enjoyed playing basketball with him this morning. I’m sure he’ll be back out on the court again soon.” …
The injury occurred in the last of the five games Obama was playing with his friends, which included his nephew, Avery Robinson, personal aide Reggie Love and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Incredible Blake Griffin dunk

                                                                   It was stunning and exhilarating to watch live, and it must be noted that Griffin's dunks were in the service of an incredible night as a whole. Griffin scored 44 points, a new Clippers rookie record, had 15 rebounds, and dished seven assists, and kept up the fight even as the Knicks built a fourth-quarter lead: with the game out of reach in the last minute, he snared a rebound and tried to go up and under for a reverse dunk on three Knicks. And he nearly got it.

Griffin still has some improvement to do as an NBA player — his defense or lack thereof helped Amar'e Stoudemire score 39 points in the Knicks' 124-115 win — but in one night, he clearly won Stoudemire's respect.

Rampage Jackson wins decision over machida

In an exciting battle of former light heavyweight champions that ended up with a shocking split decision, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson defeated Lyoto Machida in the main event at UFC 123.

I Had the fight for Machida 29-28 and was sure Machida would win the decision, and I was very stunned that two judges gave the fight to Rampage, 29-28. One judge gave it to Machida, 29-28.

Rampage acknowledged afterward that he didn't think he deserved the decision.

"Machida whooped my ass tonight," Rampage said afterward. "I considered that an ass whooping."

Machida didn't complain afterward, even though he seemed to have been robbed of a victory.

"I did the best that I could, but I guess the judges thought that Quinton won," Machida said.  

UFC 123 Results: B.J. Penn Demolishes Matt Hughes in 21 Seconds

B.J. Penn made  short work of Matt Hughes at UFC 123. He demolished the former welterweight champ in 0:21 of the first round with a hard right hand followed up by a brutal series of punches from the top. Penn seemed extra fired up for this fight.

It was the kind of performance that made Penn one of the legends of the sport many years ago. 

After the bout, B.J. Penn ran out of the Octagon briefly but returned to have his hand raised.

This was the rubber match in one of MMA's most dramatic rivalries. Penn shocked the world when he upset Hughes and took his welterweight title in 2004 at UFC 46. He walked away from the belt in a contract dispute immediately thereafter.

Hughes got his revenge in their rematch at UFC 63 when he pounded out Penn in the third round after surviving a series of tight submission attacks in the second round.

Actor Wesley Snipes headed to prison for tax evasion

Actor Wesley Snipes headed to prison for tax evasion      Actor Wesley Snipes was sentenced to 3 years in prison Thursday for tax evasion.

Snipes was convicted on three misdemeanor counts of failure to file federal income tax returns.

"This case presents the court with a singular opportunity to deter tax fraud nationwide," the government said in its sentencing recommendation.

Snipes, who has starred in movies such as "Blade," "Major League" and "Murder at 1600," had been charged with felony conspiracy counts for participating in a scheme that rejects the legal foundation of the tax system. However, a jury accepted his argument that he was innocently duped by errant tax advisers and acquitted him on the most serious charges.

"The fact that Snipes was acquitted on two felony charges and convicted 'only' on three misdemeanor counts has been portrayed in the mainstream media as a 'victory' for Snipes," the government document says.

"The troubling implication of such coverage for the millions of average citizens who are aware of this case is that the rich and famous Wesley Snipes has 'gotten away with it.' In the end the criminal conduct of Snipes must not be seen in such a light."   Actor Wesley Snipes was ordered on Friday to start serving a three-year prison sentence for failing to file income tax returns by a federal judge who rejected the Hollywood star's bid for a new trial.

"The defendant Snipes had a fair trial ... The time has come for the judgment to be enforced," U.S. District Judge Terrell Hodges said in his ruling.

Revoking bail for the 48-year-old star of the "Blade" trilogy, the judge ordered him to report to prison as directed by the U.S. Marshals Service or Bureau of Prisons.

It was not clear when or where Snipes would begin serving his time behind bars, however. His lawyer, Daniel Meachum, has said he would appeal if a new trial was denied.

Meachum told the Orlando Sentinel 

"Wesley is very disappointed but staying strong and positive," the newspaper quoted Meachum as saying.

Snipes had already lost his appeal of the prison sentence stemming from his 2008 conviction in Hodges' Ocala, Florida, court on three counts of "willful failure to file tax returns" for 1999 through 2001.

Snipes was found not guilty of five other counts in the high-profile felony tax case.

In seeking a new trial, Meachum had argued that jurors in the original trial were biased and that the prosecution's star witness had his own criminal problems.

At his sentencing, prosecutors said Snipes, a resident of Windermere, Florida, had earned more than $38 million since 1999 but had filed no tax returns or paid any taxes through October 2006.

Although he is best known for his roles in action films, Snipes has also had critical success in comedies like "White Men Can't Jump" in 1992. He played the lead in director Spike Lee's interracial drama "Jungle Fever" in 1991 and also played the jazz saxophonist in Lee's "Mo' Better Blues" in 1990.

Eric Thompson, a supervisor in the U.S. Marshals Service office in Orlando, Florida, said the Bureau of Prisons would notify Snipes and his lawyer of a surrender date.

"He'll probably get it by certified mail," Thompson said.

He declined to say what prison was likely to be selected for Snipes except to say that it would not be in Florida.

A listing for Snipes already posted on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website says his prisoner ID or registration number as 43355-018, his location is "in transit" and his release date is "unknown."
